Money is Tight .... Tips for Small Businesses by Lesley Spencer Home-Based Working Moms www.hbwm.com Do your own market research by talking to potential clients or customers. Try teaming up with another non-competitive business that targets same market as you. You can double your marketing efforts. (Ex: Word processing & print shops) When you have a satisfied customer, don't be afraid to ask for referrals. Barter or trade your services for other products or services you need. When buying office equipment and supplies, go to a place that offers a low-price guarantee. (I did this recently and received $35 back on a purchase). If you are looking for computer equipment, consider buying used equipment. Look in the classifieds and talk to others who may know someone looking to upgrade. (Ask for warranty information and make sure machine is in good working condition.) Send postcards for direct mail solicitation. They are cheaper to print and mail. Also they are more likely to be read since they take no effort to open. If you hire sales help, pay by commission only so you only spend money if you make money. Use pre-printed design papers for letterhead, brochures, business cards, etc. if you only need a small amount. ******************************* HBWM - Home-Based Working Moms (formerly WAHM - Work At Home Moms) is a national organization for mothers (and fathers) who currently work at home and those who would like to.
